In several analyses of democratic backsliding, the political apparatus’ capacity to take in the voices of the people has been identified as a key deficit. Improved listening has consequently been proposed as the solution to many of our current ills. In this digital seminar, we take up the issue of democratic listening, focusing in particular on how the study of this phenomenon has been and can be developed within rhetorical studies. We will hear brief talks by Mary Scudder, Purdue University, and Lisa Villadsen, University of Copenhagen, followed by a plenary discussion.
The session will be chaired by Kristian Bjørkdahl, and the occasion for the seminar is a planned Scandinavian-language volume on rhetoric and listening, to be edited by Bjørkdahl and Janne Krogh-Bjørnerud.
